En 2015, in the heart of Algerian winter, concealed beneath my coat, a small camera in hand, I ventured into the streets of Algiers. What struck me initially were the vibrant colors adorning this foreign city, creating a lively mosaic in the darkness.
But this artistic experience transcends mere image capture. It becomes an exploration of my perception as a marginalized individual in public space, particularly at night in Algeria. The scrutinizing and intrusive gazes that seemed to follow me at every street corner sparked a desire for confrontation within me.
For fifteen days, I repeated this ritual, transforming my experience into an artistic performance. I experimented with different techniques to record not only what I saw but also my own feelings. Each step in the streets became a silent declaration of my existence.
I use the place as a theater where the complex dynamics of power play out. A dance between shadow and light, where blurred contours defy the rigid limits of society.
Through this project, I explore the themes of the duality between shadow and light, reflected in the contrasts of the nocturnal city, symbolizing the struggle between visibility and darkness, recognition and anonymity. It is a reflection on how our perception of ourselves is influenced by the gaze of others and by the social norms that surround us.
